Emission Testing of Cars
- New Regulation effective 01/08/2007 |
As from the 1st of
August all vehicles (excluding agriculture and Commercial)must now be tested
once every 12 months to check the level of emissions. Pass certificates will be
required to obtain an MOT or to renew annual road tax.
The test is quite straight forward but details are required from the Vehicle
Registration Document (Log Book) the current cost is 19 YTL. Should a vehicle
fail the test a 15 day period is allowed for repairs otherwise the vehicle will
be banned from the road.
Police will be conducting a series of road side checks with officials from the
Environmental Protection Department. Drivers of vehicles without certificates or
whose vehicle fails a road side test are currently allowed a 5 day period to
correct the problem. However should the vehicle be subject to a further random
check without the problem being corrected the driver may be subject to a fine of
up to nine times the minimum wage (950 YTL)
The regulations will be enforced gradually but members are advised to complete
the test as soon as possible to comply with the law. Currently there are 7
testing stations but none in Girne which may be a problem however it is expected
that a Girne test facility will be open soon.
